Abiogenesis

Year: 2022
Technique & Material:
Digital print on aluminium (2000 x 800 mm)
Installation photos by: David Stjernholm
For as long as there have been machines and circuitry there have been insects making homes within and upon them. They are, after all, warm and ventilated, cosy and safe. Over time, more symbiotic relationships have been nurtured: algae-cooled server halls, for instance. Conversely, DNA – the most secure and capable hard drive that we know of – is relentlessly studied in an effort to solve the great data storage challenges of our time.

Abiogenesis references the term that describes the natural process by which life arises from non-living matter. The work presents a rhizomatic structure comprising a constellation of life forms in deep symbiosis with a computer. While some parts of its structure are technological, this computer is not made to serve humanity. It has built itself, lives its own life, and is a symbiotic breeding ground for both biological and artificial life.
