In the project Making Kin, Wang & Söderström study tiny organisms of great interest. In the most extreme environments on Earth, there are life forms known as extremophiles: species that survive conditions ranging from low temperatures, and radioactive radiation to severe salinity. If there is life on another planet, it might be an extremophile. By labelling these microbes as “extreme”, a human norm is implied. Wang & Söderström have used genetic data from these creatures to create both existing and speculative life forms using generative algorithms. This exhibition presents two new sculptures, one of a creature that lives on Earth and one that is speculative. Making Kin invites us to imagine the world from the perspective of an extremophile, reflecting on our potential kinship with these creatures.
